Poor handling - front wheel skid

Postby Rusty chain on Fri Dec 04, 2009 9:24 pm

Hi there

I've currently got the loan of my dad's 3 speed Brompton. I was hoofing home tonight and as i rounded a fast, wide corner, I felt a little bit of slippage in the front wheel. I managed to catch the slip.

At a similar corner a couple of minutes later I had a similar experience, but this time I crashed out (rush hour, so lucky no cars too close behind).

I'm fine, as is the bike, but I need to know if this is a normal handling trait? It's put me right off the bike!

I wonder if it's anything to do with the upright riding position and not having much weight going through the front wheel or having the tyres pumped up too hard? Maybe i was just riding too fast :o

Hi there,

I have never skidded out thankfully but I do have some problems with the front wheel when going around corners, I've just learnt to take them a little bit slower.

I also find that if I "hoof it" a bit of the lights then the front wheel will raise of the ground and I pull a wheelie, a bit like a drag car off the line!

I think the main reason for this is because of the lack of weight going through the front wheel and because of the small wheels of the Brompton the front steering tends to be a bit jolty anyway.
